Speedometer Calibration in Virginia Traffic Cases

Speedometer Calibration Is Evidence In a VA Reckless Driving Speeding Case
Mechanics use a device called a dynamometer, or “dyno,” to measure the accuracy of a vehicle’s speedometer. The test compares your actual speed to the speed displayed on the dashboard, usually in 10-mph intervals. Both digital and analog speedometers can be checked this way.
The calibration report should include two columns: one for the vehicle’s actual speed and one for the displayed speed. For the results to be admissible in court, the report must be signed by the technician and verified by a notary. You’ll often see “witnessed and sworn” language, which confirms the report is authentic.
A sworn calibration report is admissible under Virginia law, but how much weight it carries depends on the judge. Some judges give calibration reports considerable weight, especially when the test is performed close in time to the traffic stop. Others may discount the evidence or insist on seeing the original report instead of a scanned copy.
